چکیده

Transient microstructure in the diffuse interstellar medium has been observed towards galactic and extragalactic sources for decades, usually in lines of atoms and ions, and, more recently, in molecular lines. Evidently, there is a molecular component to the transient microstructure. In this paper we explore the chemistry that may arise in such microstructure. We use a PDR code to model the conditions of relatively high density, low temperature, very low visual extinction and very short elapsed time that are appropriate for these objects. We find that there is a well defined region of parameter space where detectable abundances of molecular species might be found. The best matching models are those where the interstellar microstructure is young (< 100 yr), small (∼ 100 AU), and dense (> 10 cm).

Detection of H 3 1 in the Diffuse Interstellar Medium

The molecular ion H3 1 is considered the cornerstone of interstellar chemistry because it initiates the reactions responsible for the production of many larger molecules. Recently discovered in dense molecular clouds, H3 1 has now been observed in the diffuse interstellar medium toward Cygnus OB2 No. 12. Analysis of H3 1 chemistry suggests that the high H3 1 column density (3.8 3 10 per square ...

Cosmic-ray astrochemistry.

Gas-phase chemistry in the interstellar medium is driven by fast ion-molecule reactions. This, of course, demands a mechanism for ionization, and cosmic rays are the ideal candidate as they can operate throughout the majority of both diffuse and dense interstellar clouds. Aside from driving interstellar chemistry via ionization, cosmic rays also interact with the interstellar medium in ways tha...

Nuclear Spin Dependence in Reactions of H3 in the Laboratory and the Interstellar Medium By

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. For this reason, the chemistry of the interstellar medium is largely dominated by the interaction of hydrogenic neutrals and ions. The hydrogen molecule, H2, and the simplest polyatomic ion, H3 , each exist in one of two forms identified as ortho or para, which are defined by their total nuclear spins. These spin modifications have differen...

■ Abstract Our understanding of the evolution of organic molecules, and their voyage from molecular clouds to the early solar system and Earth, has changed dramatically. Incorporating recent observational results from the ground and space, as well as laboratory simulation experiments and new methods for theoretical modeling, this review recapitulates the inventory and distribution of organic mo...
